Akwesasne – Ontario

Thursday, 26 April 2012, 11:13 AM

Shara Francis-Herne from the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation made this video through this year’s Youth ICT workshop.

In this video, Shara interviews several people in the community. She asks how people in Akwesasne are developing and using local broadband and communications networks.

These local broadband champions talk about how high speed Internet was developed in the community. They discuss how it is used for public services like education, health, media, government and economic development.

People in Akwesasne also use social media like Facebook to make announcements to and connect with community members. The community even uses Facebook to help people find new pets at the local animal shelter!

The people of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation live on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, in a territory that includes the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, and New York state. Read more about theirĀ history on the community website.
