In 2020, the INDU committee held a series of consultations regarding Accessibility and Affordability on Telecommunications Services.
FMCC’s submission to the proceedings argued that the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the essential nature of broadband access, as well as the breadth and depth of the digital divide. FMCC recommended that the government should address barriers faced by local providers, and provide an emergency fund specifically for non-profit and Indigenous telecom providers to upgrade and extend broadband infrastructure. The submission also brought attention to the need for spectrum management and regulation to support small and non-profit community operators.
